What Kind of Resolve You Got?
A New Year approaches! This means that before the night is through, you’re supposed to determine some change of course – preferably one for the better – that you’ll have every intention of sticking with but will likely abandon by February. A handful of you might be of the fortunate mindset that allows for relatively easy implementation of changes, probably due to some hard-fought wrangling with your ego. These will-warriors may be so in control of themselves that any resolution made tonight would be indistinguishable from the one they made on June 27th.
And then there’s the rest of us…. I suppose I can be grateful that I have so many vices that all sorts of colorful combinations of resolutions can be chosen, and I’ll still have more to take on next year!
I’ve just returned from CVS with a box of nicotine patches. I’ve got four cigarettes left in my last pack ever – four is my lucky number. I plan to enjoy the six-pack I’ve picked up, not-particularly-enjoy my final cancer sticks, and then get to bed early so I can wake up to a New Year!
So, what are my fellow habit-slaves going to escape from in 2020? Do you think you’ll keep your word to yourself past February?

Of course, my other resolution is to be a regular attendee of Sunday Mass.
Not sure EWTN counts.
Best of luck with the patches. It’s one of the best of resolutions.
Good to know! 😉
In other news: my fellow millennial/indigo-child, JP Sears has some 2020 predictions you do not want to miss.
I hope all of you have nothing worse than a typical New Year!
I resolve to make no resolutions. But you knew that.
I did! Maybe I’m the one who should be making super-predictions. 🤔
No more riding through my neighbor’s demesne burning crops, razing barns, and driving off cattle.
UnlessUntil provoked. And they support New Mexico Tech!
That’s actually the real reason I’m quitting smoking.
Forgot to address the topic of the post.
The simple answer is that I’ve resolved to give up blended Scotch whiskey.
The waaaaay more complicated answer is that I’ve resolved–with complete spousal buy-in–to shed the chains of the Boston-Washington corridor and seriously explore a move to flyover country.
Oooh! Where are you guys looking?
The guy who invented the patches left the patent to the school (he was an alumus) so the profits from that have kept tuition there quite low for years.
Seriously? I didn’t know that. I attended Tech (New Mexico Institute of Minding and Technology, in my day) for my one ignominious year of collage, back in the dawn of time. It was back then, and probably still is, an overlooked gem of an institution.
Oh, my!
I don’t know if that was a typo, but we should definitely start calling it collage!
I make sure not to start something without a very specific idea of what’s involved.
So, someplace between Kansas and Minnesota.
Well, it was a typo. But, frankly, one was about as productive as the other, in my case. ;)
Well, thank goodness you could be channeled to bring us such an appropriate term to express our thoughts about so-called higher education. If there’s one thing I noticed about the kids I went to school with, it was that they can’t write a lick – funny how you more than manage.
Happy New Year, Henry!
Minding what? ⚒⛏
Does it count to quit procrastinating the several things that have been procrastinated over extended periods already?
Sure it does!
This isn’t my first shot at quitting, so, technically, I’m in the same boat as you.
Collage.
Excellent!
I always wanted to learn minding, but I never made it past braining.
Not everyone’s ready for collage.
Minding what?
Arahanted!
I’ve resolved not to resolve to quit my procrastinating.
You really should’ve put off posting this.
I like the part where it was the Institute of Minding. Probably took lessons from my m0ther.
I resolve to do better at policing my brass this year. Nephew gave me a nice pic rail brass catcher for my AR-15.
Instead of resolving, I like to choose a “guiding word” for the year. I even found a “word of the year generator” here: http://wordoftheyear.me/index.php Most years the word has been helpful in getting me over creative slumps. If I hit a nonproductive patch, I conjure up the word and think how I might apply it.
